Recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion, have underscored the rapid pace of technological progress in this field. They have also triggered a flurry of debate among policymakers and publics around the world about how to unlock the benefits of AI while minimizing its risks. These technological and societal shifts pose challenges and opportunities for political scientists, and I will discuss some promising research directions – cutting across subfields – on how AI is shaping politics and politics is shaping AI. These include the role of AI in international security, the functioning of democracy, and mass surveillance, as well as how public opinion, regulations, and trade policies are shaping research, commercialization, and use of AI. Political scientists can make a valuable contribution to shaping public policy on AI, but doing so will require creative research designs that yield anticipatory insights about AI’s potential impact on the world.
