[우당 해외학자 콜로키움 – University of Toronto, Prof. Lucan Way]
이번 콜로키움은 캐나다 왕립학회(Royal Society of Canada) 펠로우이자 University of Toronto 정치학과 민주주의 석좌교수(Distinguished Professor of Democracy)이신 Lucan Way 교수님을 모시고 진행되며, 고려대학교 정치외교학과 평화와 민주주의연구소, 고려대 통일융합연구원 공동주최로 진행됩니다. Lucan 교수님은 민주주의와 권위주의의 세계적 패턴을 비교정치학적 관점에서 연구해 온 학자로, Steven Levitsky와의 공저 Competitive Authoritarianism을 통해 냉전 이후 등장한 혼합체제(hybrid regimes) 연구를 선도해 왔습니다. 최근 저서 Revolution and Dictatorship: The Violent Origins of Durable Authoritarianism에서는 사회혁명에서 탄생한 권위주의 체제가 왜 장기적으로 지속되는지를 비교역사적으로 분석하며 학계의 큰 주목을 받았습니다.
이번 강연에서는 신간 연구 프로젝트를 바탕으로, 민주주의가 안정적으로 유지될 것이라 여겨졌던 미국에서 어떻게 권위주의적 전환이 가능했는지를 분석합니다. 특히 정치 지도자와 사회 엘리트가 민주주의를 수호해야 할 책임을 수행하지 못했을 때 제도적 민주주의가 어떻게 약화되는지를 살펴보고, 미국 민주주의의 위기가 되돌릴 수 있는 과정인지에 대한 가능성을 탐구합니다. 민주주의의 제도적 회복력은 어디에서 비롯되는가? 민주주의 붕괴는 구조적 필연인가, 정치적 선택의 결과인가? 그리고 현대 민주주의는 어떤 조건에서 다시 회복될 수 있는가? 등의 질문을 중심으로 오늘날 민주주의의 미래를 함께 모색하고자 합니다.

Lucan Way (PhD University of California, Berkeley) is Distinguished Professor of Democracy in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and Fellow in the Royal Society of Canada. His research focuses on global patterns of democracy and dictatorship. His most recent book (with Steven Levitsky), Revolution and Dictatorship: The Violent Origins of Durable Authoritarianism (Princeton University Press, 2022) provides a comparative historical explanation for the extraordinary durability of autocracies (China, Cuba, USSR) born of violent social revolution. The book was one of TIME magazine’s 33 Most Anticipated Books of Fall 2022 and the recipient of the Juan Linz Best Book Prize in the Comparative Study of Democracy & Autocracy. His first book, Competitive Authoritarianism: Hybrid Regimes after the Cold War (with Steven Levitsky), was published in 2010 by Cambridge University Press. Way’s work on competitive authoritarianism has been cited more than ten thousand times and helped stimulate new and wide-ranging research into the dynamics of hybrid democratic-authoritarian rule. Professor Way is currently writing a book with Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt – under contract with Crown Press – on the breakdown of American democracy.
